2018 Goals Review

It’s the end of April and it’s been a pretty busy month! We’re a third of the way through 2018 already and I think it’s a good time to review my goals for the year and evaluate whether I’m making progress with them.

♢ WRITING: To finish my current writing project
I’m so far making good headway with this, and thanks to Camp NaNoWriMo I’ve managed to get my head down and crack on with a much needed plot clean up!
♢ FRIENDS: To catch up with my friends more often than I currently do
I’ve been doing well with this so far (with some minor down time), which is great because I’ve caught up with a lot of friends I’ve not seen in a while.
♢ EXERCISE: To keep up twice a week gym sessions, and to try a kickboxing class
I’ve been less regular with the gym as whole but I did manage to go twice weekly this April, and have worked pretty hard while there. I haven’t tried a kickboxing class yet but I’m planning to book a block of classes when I finish paying for my dental treatment in November!
♢ DIET: To limit the sugary treats I eat, and to make healthy batch meals that aren’t carb heavy that I can heat up over a week
Both of these I’ve managed to do, especially over the past month. Over April I kept a chart where I record when I had sugary snacks that day, which helped me more so than the strict goal setting each month. I’m now down to allowing myself a weekly treat rather than almost daily!
♢ BEAUTY: To get my teeth straightened up again
This was slow going but I’ve finally got my retainers and have just started my fourth set. Although there’s still a way to go, I can see a massive difference in the movement already. The only awkward thing is having to take them out to eat, but I’m better at being discreet with it now!
♢ FINANCES: To save at least £500 a month
With holidays and also my monthly repayment for my Invisalign treatment (around £200 a month until November), I’ve not reached my £500 monthly aim, but I have saved in general around £300 on average a month!
♢ CAREER: To brush up on Ruby and learn NodeJS to the point where I can build a nice, simple app in both, and to keep attending interesting tech events
I built a couple of apps at the beginning of the year in Ruby on Rails, which were both fun and I’d like to try and build a couple more and maybe host them as show pieces on my portfolio. I need to get started on NodeJs properly so that will be my next aim over the next few months. I’ve also learnt the basics of Angular 4 too. I’ve attended a couple of tech events, but certainly not monthly.
♢ ORGANISATION: To stop hoarding and have a huge clear out to declutter my things
I’ve been surprisingly proactive with this: every month or so I’ve picked out things I can get rid of and have taken them to charity. I’m normally not that great when it comes to going through my things and sorting them out like that, so I’m really proud I’ve done this much so far.
♢ TRAVEL: To visit two foreign places I’ve not been to before, and also a place in the UK I’ve never been to either
I’ve visited Reykjavik, Iceland and Dublin, Ireland and also Bristol, England! So I’ve already fulfilled this. I think what I’ll do now is add another foreign place I’ve not been to before and another place in the UK to visit too.
♢ SKILLS: To actively improve my guitar playing and Italian language skills
I’ve been on top of my guitar playing (keeping a chart too!), and I’ve been playing almost every day. My italian learning on the other hand has gone a bit stale this month until a week ago, so I need to pick that up again!

Setting monthly goals has really helped me keep on top of  my new years resolutions, and even though it’s only April I feel like I’ve achieved a lot of them already, so I’m going to update them a little to reflect where I am now.

Updated 2018 Goals:

♢ WRITING: To finish my current writing project, spending at least 35 hours on it every month
♢ FRIENDS: To catch up with my friends more often
♢ EXERCISE: To keep up twice a week gym sessions, and to try a kickboxing class
♢ DIET: To track the sugary treats I eat, and make healthy batch meals for work lunches
♢ BEAUTY: To get my teeth straightened up again
♢ FINANCES: To save at least £500 a month
♢ CAREER: To brush up on Ruby, learn NodeJS, Angular and React to the point where I can build a nice, simple app using these, add to my portfolio, and to attend interesting tech events
♢ ORGANISATION: To stop hoarding and have a huge clear out to declutter my things. Get rid of books, paperwork, unused beauty products and old university notes floating around!
♢ TRAVEL: To visit three international places and 2 places in the UK I’ve never been to before
♢ SKILLS: To actively improve my guitar playing and Italian language skills by working on them at least once a week
